The point guard position has been an area of need for the Miami Heat in recent years. Pat Riley has struggled to replace Goran Dragic since he left the franchise in 2021.
Terry Rozier has been the latest star to fall short on South Beach. As such, Riley and HC Erik Spoelstra are expected to search for a new ball-handler this summer, and that's where Chris Paul could come into the equation.
"Anticipation is building that Paul could be on the move again this offseason even though his time as a Spur as a mentor to Victor Wembanyama and a young team overall was an unabashed success," Marc Stein reported on Monday. "...You can be certain that there will be interest in the 20-year veteran if he wants to keep playing after Paul just surpassed Utah legend John Stockton for playing and starting all 82 games so late in his career. (Stockton did it in his 19th season.)"
Paul, 40, is still a high-level guard in the NBA. In 82 regular-season games for the San Antonio Spurs, he averaged 8.8 points, 3.6 rebounds and 7.4 assists. He shot 42.7 percent from the field and 37.7 percent from three-point range.
Miami needs that type of production from the guard position. As such, the franchise would be wise to turn its attention toward a player once dubbed "the Point God." It's also worth noting that Miami is unlikely to have an issue with Paul's age. Riley recently said in a news conference that he judges players based on what they can contribute rather than the year they were born.
"I think an aging great player, who may not be able to carry a team together, can rise to the occasion in the playoffs," Riley said. "…I still think that an aging player can play. Look at LeBron [James]. I mean, look at these players. It’s incredible. Players like LeBron and others who have played into their mid to late 30s and produced at a high level can help teams win championships. You have to pick out the right one, but I’m not against that, no."
Paul would undoubtedly be a stopgap for Miami. Nevertheless, his presence would give the front office time to explore the league and find a long-term solution to a position that has caused issues for multiple years. Furthermore, if the Heat do land a new leading star, Paul could get a chance to compete, courtesy of a weakened Eastern Conference.
Pairing Paul and Miami makes sense. It would be a marriage of convenience. And knowing Riley, that is exactly what he will be looking for to get the team back on track.
